Methodology

System Overview

1 · Detect

Automated feeds watch official government advisories and a curated list of verified news publishers, around the clock.

2 · Evaluate

Every item is evaluated and graded by tier — official, trusted community security source, or an automated summary of verified reporting — and by severity, with links to the original sources.

3 · Alert

Active alerts go live on the map and list, stay reviewable, and expire visibly. Expired alerts are archived, never silently deleted.

Our mission

Magen Alert is a safety service for Jewish communities worldwide and Israeli travellers. We track the current antisemitic climate on the ground, country by country, down to city and neighbourhood, and report destination hazards for travellers — terror threats, civil unrest, crimes against tourists, natural disasters, health alerts and transport disruption. It is not about Israel, or about events inside Israel, Gaza or the West Bank.

Three source tiers

Developing and confirmed

A report from a single outlet is marked Developing: single source, unconfirmed. When two or more independent outlets report the same event it becomes Confirmed, and we show how many outlets reported it, with links to each.

Human review and automation

Critical items are reviewed by a person. Summaries and translations of non-English headlines are produced automatically by AI, and are labelled as such. Always check the original source before acting on a report.

What the map colours mean

Alert severity and climate posture are separate measures. The climate layer reflects weighted, time-decayed incident scores; official Israeli NSC warnings set the posture for travel places. No reports does not guarantee safety.

How climate is scored

Incident points combine category, severity, verification, recency and independent-source coverage. Repeat reporting is grouped before scoring, and child-place contributions roll up once to their parents. Each scored place has thresholds appropriate to its level: country, area, city or neighbourhood. Activity alone cannot make a place Critical. Open a place’s “How this is scored” panel for its current thresholds and largest contributors.

Global Threatcon counts scored countries and cities, excluding travel places. The line below the global level summarises those counts. “Hot neighbourhoods” lists up to three neighbourhoods with recent confirmed or developing scored incidents beneath a city.

Travel posture and reports

Travel-place posture follows the official Israeli NSC level, not the activity score. Where an area has its own warning it is used; otherwise the nearest ancestor’s warning applies, with the highest applicable level shown. Activity alerts carry a “Reports” badge and do not change that official level. Places with no official level available are labelled accordingly. Additional destinations covered on the Travel page retain their existing classifications.
